| Work Day -- THANK YOU! A hearty thank you to all who attended our school spruce-up last Saturday. The final product is a fresh coat of paint, a well-weeded playground, cob web-free hallways, toilets that all flush, a courtyard that looks a lot less like a jungle, a cleaned-out science lab, and classrooms that are nearly ready for the return of our students on Wednesday. Again, thank you, and hopefully all who attended were able to find a new face to greet and a familiar hand to shake as well. Health Form Required for New Students Virginia Health Information Form is required by state of VA and every student must have one in their records upon entrance to a school. It includes a Physical, Shot Records and current TB test. Pediatricians have the form, we have them in the office (and you can drop by to pick one up), or you can download the form at the following website: http://www.doe.virginia.gov/ Class Lists Check your e-mail for important information on how parents should complete their "User Registration" to access the 2010-2011 Class Lists. Once you register, check the web site for the Class Lists under the section "For Parents" on the left navigation bar. Rivendell Robotics Club The Rivendell Robotics Club is starting!
· The club is part of the FIRST Lego League (FLL) program, designed to promote engineering and computer skills. Students will 1) program a Lego Mindstorm robot to navigate an obstacle course, and 2) complete a research project based on the annual theme (this year’s is based on thebiomedical sciences). · Our team will hold its first meeting at 3:00 on Thursday 9/2 at the big conference table. Team size is limited to 10 students. We already have five students signed up. If your student is interested in joining, please RSVP ASAP. First come, first serve. Space is limited. · We have enough equipment if there is interest in starting a 2nd team,. We would need a volunteer to coach the team (see: How to coach a robotics team) Please let me know. · A note on the age range: If you go to the FLL home page, you may note that the program is for ages 9-14. Since this is the first time we are trying this at Rivendell, I am keeping the team to ages 11-14 while we work out the kinks. If we have volunteers to coach a 2nd or 3rd team, we can consider opening the age range to 9-14. · This may be the first time some parents have heard of the program. I’m sorry if that is the case (I’m still new here). Funding for the team was provided by my company (Lockheed Martin). The team is not funded by the school. If the club catches on (and I continue to get corporate funding), we can continue and/or expand the program.
I look forward to an outstanding season. Please let me know if you have any questions.
